Americans have more than $1.3 trillion in student loan debt, but some areas of the country carry more of the load than others. Nationwide, graduates left school with an average of $28,400 in student loan debt in 2015. Roughly 60 percent of graduates had student loans to pay off. Student loan rate aggregator LendEDU analyzed the most recent financial aid data from 1,300 colleges and universities to find the states where graduates had the most loan debt on average.
