Ronald Reagan, Cowboy in Chief

Pictures of a denim-clad Ronald Reagan on horseback have now reached near iconic status, but as it turns out, while Reagan was an avid horse rider, he wasn't always a cowboy. In 1966, so the story goes, a reporter wanted to do a segment with Reagan on a horse. When the time came, Lyn Nofziger, Reagan’s press secretary, was shocked to find Reagan decked out in English riding clothes. "I said, 'You can’t do that,'" Mr. Nofziger later recalled. "He said, ‘This is the way I always ride.’ I said, 'This is not the purpose of that. It's to get votes. They’re going to think you look like a sissy!'"
