Wall Street Protests: An American Tradition

Grounded for Good

More than 12,000 members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization walked off the job on August 3, 1981, setting off a chain of events that would redefine labor relations in America. In response, President Ronald Reagan fired thousands of striking air-traffic controllers who he said were violating the law. Before this protest, major work stoppages averaged about 300 per year; today, that number is fewer than 30.
