Laura Dern – Inland Empire (2006, Studio Canal)
Even the most blinded of David Lynch fans (and I count myself in that category) has trouble defending this one. As with any Lynch work, his strength here is in setting a mood. There are many, many wonderfully moody moments in this film. The problem is none of them make a damn bit of sense.
The story of an actress (Dern) whose grip on reality slips further and further, the film simply fails to give us enough to hang onto. The audience never knows exactly what’s going on, and while a little of that can be awesome, the result here is mostly a fascinating mess.
