Ecuador come into this tournament facing a legitimate tragedy: Star striker Christian Benitez died at 27 last summer, leaving both a hole in the squad and a sense of sadness in the team. Ecuador seems likely to finish last in this group, but promising youngster Enner Valencia will hope to fill Benitez’s shoes and help shock the bigger teams.
Players to watch: Valencia, who could be one of the surprises of the tournament, along with Man U’s Antonio Valencia, who captains the team.
Prediction: Will probably finish no better than third in their group, unless the Swiss fall apart.
