Apollo 13 (1995)
At his worst, Ron Howard’s films can feel vacant, filled with nothing but bland optimism. When given the right material, though, that sunny California outlook is exactly right. With “Apollo 13,” Howard was able to capture the feeling of a time when space exploration was new and exciting -- and dangerous. He pulls off the delicate trick of creating tension in a story we already know has a happy ending.
