2. Austin, TX
Turns out this hip city is also a hot location for all those hipsters’ parents, with an unemployment rate of just 3.7 percent among 45-54-year-olds and hovers between 1 percent and 3 percent for 55-64-year-olds (the number can vary from month to month due to the small sample size). In addition to its high-tech status as “Silicon Hills” – Apple, Google, eBay, Cisco Systems, and Facebook all have offices here – it’s home to a wealth of pharmaceutical companies and grocery giant Whole Foods. But perhaps most impressive is the University of Texas at Austin, which employs 16,500 faculty and staff, more than 2,500 of which are faculty with an average age of 50.5 and an average salary of just under $100K. Go Longhorns!
